Project summary

The NGO Frente Animal is preparing a campaign - Portugal Sem Gaiolas (Portugal Without Cages) - which aims to eliminate cages from livestock production in Portugal, following in the footsteps of other EU countries. It is a fundamental step towards improving the living conditions of these animals and reducing their suffering.

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

➡️Raised awareness about the conditions of animals raised in cages in Portugal, with an emphasis on chickens. This will be done via a large campaign reaching hundreds of thousands through public figure engagement, digital ads and outdoors.
➡️A better legal framework and a ban on these cages: achieved through a petition signed by at least 35k individuals, which will be used as leverage, and a mail campaign, directed at members of parliament.

❗ STEP 1: Laying the foundations for change - €5,000

With your support, we will create the campaign website and videos where the truth will be revealed, where mobilisation begins, and where people like you will discover how to take action for animals.

❗STEP 2: Reveal the hidden truth - €8,000

You will make it possible to investigate and reveal what happens behind the doors of the industry — exposing to the country the suffering that so many are still unaware of.

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

Nuno Alvim: project manager and coordinator. He holds a degree in law and criminology. He was the director of the Portuguese Vegetarian Society for 6 years (2018-2024) during which he was responsible for kickstarting and managing several corporate and lobbying campaigns. For example, between 2015 and 2016, he successfully lobbied for the introduction of an unprecedented law that mandates the provision of plant-based meals in all public facilities (https://metro.co.uk/2017/03/10/it-is-now-illegal-not-to-offer-vegan-food-at-prisons-hospitals-and-schools-in-portugal-6501872/). He is the co-founder of “Frente Animal”, a new Portuguese organisation focused on the better ethical treatment of farmed animals.

Joana Machado: corporate officer & specialist. She holds a degree in educational sciences. Joana is the co-founder of “Frente Animal”, and has more than 2 years of experience in farmed animal’s investigations and conducting corporate lobbying work. She has led investigations that exposed cruel practices in broiler farms and achieved presence in at least 3 media pieces that had hundreds of thousands of viewers.

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

❗Insufficient Funding

• Why it matters: The campaign depends heavily on donations to finance outreach, lobbying, research, and coalition-building.

• Risks: Without funds, the campaign cannot pay staff, produce materials, organize events, or run ads effectively.

❗Lack of public support

• Why it matters: For meaningful policy change, you need strong public backing and political will.

• Risks: If the public isn’t aware or doesn’t care about cage-free reforms, politicians are unlikely to act.

❗Possible Outcomes

• Continued Use of Cages in Portugal: Tens or hundreds of thousands of animals remain confined in cruel, inhumane conditions for years to come.

• Worsening Gap Between Portugal and EU Standards: other EU countries move forward with cage bans (e.g., Germany, Austria), Portugal could fall behind, politically and ethically.

How much money have you raised in the last 12 months, and from where?

Most of the funds we have raised in the past 12 months were from some Philanthropic foundations based in the US, that have generously granted our organization enough funds to hold operations. However, these funds are limited and not enough to successfully pull of this campaign effort.
