I’m developing a low-cost material that turns waste plastic into a useful tool for managing heat. By combining recycled plastic with phase-change materials, I want to create a material that stores excess heat and releases it when needed, tackling plastic waste and rising energy demand together. The goal is to build and test a prototype that could eventually be used in buildings and other applications to improve thermal efficiency.
I want to develop a material that addresses two problems at once: the enormous amount of plastic waste we throw away and the energy required to maintain building and other systems' temperatures. My approach is to use waste plastic as a structural material for phase-change materials, which can absorb and release heat as temperatures change. I want to develop and test a prototype, measure how much heat it can store and how reliably it performs over repeated cycles, and identify where it could be used in practice.
The funding will go directly toward materials and testing for the prototype: collecting and processing suitable waste plastic, obtaining the phase-change material and supporting materials, fabricating samples, and testing their thermal performance over repeated heating and cooling cycles. The goal is to turn the idea into a physical prototype rather than leave it as a concept.
