Dr. Sherifat Adegbesan is an aquaculture and fisheries professional with expertise spanning sustainable aquaculture, fisheries development, aquatic animal welfare, aquatic food systems, ocean governance, gender-responsive fisheries development, and climate adaptation strategies. My work focuses on advancing sustainable and inclusive approaches within fisheries and aquaculture systems through research, policy engagement, stakeholder collaboration, and capacity strengthening initiatives.
I have demonstrated leadership in fish welfare promotion and aquatic animal welfare advocacy in Nigeria, with growing efforts directed toward strengthening fish welfare consideration within aquaculture production systems through farmer education, institutional engagement, and evidence-based approaches. She recently developed and published the Fish Welfare Training Guide in Nigeria, contributing to practical knowledge transfer and farmer capacity development on fish welfare adoption.
My research interests extend to gender equality and women’s empowerment within fisheries and aquaculture value chains, with a focus on data-driven strategies, sustainable livelihoods, and policy-sensitive interventions that strengthen aquatic food systems. She has led and contributed to research initiatives addressing sustainable fish farming systems, alternative protein sources for aquaculture, climate adaptation approaches, and value chain sustainability.
Dr. Adegbesan also has professional interests in aquatic animal health and welfare systems, climate-resilient aquaculture development, sustainable energy applications in aquaculture, and policy frameworks supporting sustainable fisheries management. Her work reflects strong engagement in bridging research, policy, and practical implementation to improve outcomes for fish farmers and aquatic food systems.
My growing contributions in ocean governance, including participation in international capacity-building initiatives on marine governance, further strengthen her interdisciplinary perspective on aquatic resource sustainability.
Professionally, I combine academic research, farmer-focused extension approaches, stakeholder consultation, policy engagement, and capacity development, positioning her work at the intersection of science, sustainability, animal welfare, and responsible aquaculture development in Nigeria.
