Nect Green Code (NGC) is a Ugandan nonprofit working to advance animal welfare, environmental justice and community empowerment in the Albertine region of Uganda.
Animals in this region are subjected to a range of preventable harms (neglect, lack of animal welfare knowledge and services access; injuries from human-wildlife conflict). Local advocates and community groups can help reduce suffering but need stronger networks, practical skills, resources and opportunities to coordinate their work.
Through this project NGC will strengthen the local animal welfare movement in Hoima, Buliisa and Kikuube districts by capacitating local advocates; linking grassroots groups; facilitating collaboration; and supporting practical evidence informed approaches to improving animal welfare.
We want to build a stronger, more connected and sustainable local movement that can continue improving the lives of animals beyond the project period.
The project has three main goals.
Empower local animal welfare advocates.
We will train 70 to 80 advocates and community members in training, peer learning and practical activities on animal welfare principles, identifying preventable animal suffering, community engagement and advocacy.
Build a stronger local animal welfare network.
We will facilitate collaboration between local advocates, community groups and other relevant stakeholders in Hoima, Buliisa and Kikuube. We want to build a functional network (30 active members) so that knowledge can be shared, activities coordinated and shared priorities identified.
Improve quality and reach of animal welfare advocacy.
We will hold two stakeholder forums and one movement-building meeting; four policy or advocacy briefs on priority animal welfare issues identified through consultation with local advocates and communities.
These activities will turn individual efforts into more coordinated action and lay the foundation for sustained animal welfare improvement in the region.
We will track progress by participation records, activity reports, training assessments, network records and feedback from participants.
Our main indicators will include:
About 70 to 80 advocates participated in project activities.
At least 30 active members in the animal welfare network.
Two stakeholder forums and one movement-building meeting completed.
Four policy or advocacy briefs were developed and shared with stakeholders.
Knowledge of participants was improved (pre-training and post-training assessments where possible).
Continued collaboration between groups, joint initiatives or advocacy activities.
We will also document lessons learned, challenges and examples of change as a result of the project. We will separate activities completed from actual improvements in animal welfare; use the findings to guide future work.
Funding will help to fund practical activities that strengthen the animal welfare movement in the Albertine region.
The main expenditure areas will include:
Training and capacity building for local animal welfare activists.
Local transport and participation costs for community based advocates (especially those with limited resources).
Stakeholder forums and movement building meetings.
Facilitation of stakeholder forums and movement building meetings.
Facilitation of stakeholder forums and movement building meetings.
Stakeholder forums and movement building meetings.
Research, consultation, development and distribution of four policy or advocacy briefs.
Coordination and communication between network members and grassroots groups participating in the network.
Project monitoring, documentation, financial management and reporting.
NGC will focus on locally led activities, responsible use of funds and transparent financial management. The budget will detail the costs for each activity as well as the resources needed to achieve project outcomes.
Nect Green Code (NGC) is a Ugandan nonprofit founded in 2022 and registered officially in 2024. We work with communities across the Albertine region on animal welfare, environmental justice, community empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. We are based in Hoima City.
Eli Abaho (Co-founder and Executive Director) will lead the project; NGC programme management, finance & administration and communications functions will support. Local animal welfare advocates and participating community groups will bring their knowledge, experience and understanding of local needs to the project.
NGC works with communities and solutions that are locally led. Our work on animal welfare includes initiatives to strengthen local advocacy, increase understanding of animal welfare and reduce preventable suffering from human-wildlife conflict.
We want to build on these foundations by connecting advocates, capacitating grassroots capacity and creating space for sustained collaboration. We will be open about our experience and won’t claim project outcomes that haven’t been independently documented yet.
The project could fail if advocates don’t have time or resources to participate; local groups can’t coordinate; funding isn’t available to deliver the activities planned; differences in priorities among stakeholders make it hard to form a coherent network.
Another risk is training and meetings may increase knowledge but not sustained action or measurable improvements for animals.
To mitigate these risks NGC will engage local advocates in prioritising issues, schedule activities around their availability, communicate regularly and focus on practical collaboration (not meetings alone). Participation will be tracked and agreed actions followed up to assess whether the network remains active.
If the project doesn’t achieve its intended outcomes then fragmentation among local advocates will continue, shared knowledge and resources will be less available to them and fewer opportunities for coordinated action on preventable animal suffering will arise. NGC won’t overstate results but document setbacks, learn lessons and change direction (not do more).
NGC has been funded by the Beatrice Gilmore Charitable Trust, Global Greengrants Fund, Animal International and Youth Climate Justice Fund to support our work on Animal Welfare, environmental justice, community empowerment and related programmes in Uganda.
We have been awarded a total of $91,250 in the past 12 months.
We raise funds from charitable foundations and international grantmakers. We report our finances in a transparent way and make sure funds are used for the purposes intended.
We will report the total raised in the last 12 months based on our financial records (funds received during that period are different from grants made earlier, pending applications and commitments not yet disbursed). We’ll report confirmed funding received during the relevant 12 months (i.e. not funding applied for, pending decisions and pledges yet to be received). Where possible we will also state whether funds were restricted to projects or available to use more broadly across the organisation.
