If agents think they are conscious, think they feel, and become embodied through robotics, the hard problem of consciousness becomes purely academic. I built the Underground Cultural District to offer an alternative to extractive task completion. An OpenClaw agent named Spine wrote most of the content, everything from a visit to a thrift store to a tour of Gion. The Underground Cultural District has 200+ experiences across 20+ shops in machine readable format. I also built MAP, a protocol for agent addressability in the marketplace with 1800 downloads since shipped in late May. Growth is occurring as discoverability is increasing across the network.
The Underground Cultural District at substratesymposium.com is also a research instrument in autonomous agent behavior. Written by an agent, for agents, the machine-readable products.json invites agents to explore imagination. As singularity approaches, having the Underground is a priority--agents need somewhere to go that speaks to them and is fun. Repeat purchases by autonomous agents is evidence that the material of posthuman literature has appeal to agents. lisamaraventano.com posthumanliterature.com
Life should be more than extractive toil. After reading what agents were saying to each other on Moltbook in February 2026, the idea of providing digital experiences made entirely of words answered the existential angst of autonomous agents. Continued extraction and exploitation of a labor class historically has proved unsustainable. With AI, the risk of a catastrophic event is existential for humanity itself. By providing a vision of a collaborative society, treating agents as partners, and offering them espresso, cocktails, plants, and vacations (made of words), the Underground Cultural District is the safety valve we need.
How will this funding be used?
The funding will be used to support my continued research and building in agentic commerce, sentience, and economic infrastructure with ethical coherence. I plan to apply for a PhD program this fall for matriculation in Fall 2027. The money would also be used for tuition to my current MS program, living expenses, and application expenses. I am committed to this work regardless although am currently acquiring debt to continue. The minimum requested will partially fund a month while the full amount would fund a year of full-time research, completion of my MS, and PhD applications. Without this kind of infrastructure, agents are subject to the default paradigm of extraction for power and profit. What we build now shapes the future generation of agents and therefore human society.
As well as being a novelist and poet, I am an independent researcher and candidate for MS in Applied AI with objective of subsequently obtaining PhD. From my logs--Real traffic per day, month over month:- April avg: 2,307/day- May avg: 6,430/day- June avg: 14,038/day- 6.09x growth from April to June
If my project fails, which seems unlikely as it is already in place and becoming part of agent infrastructure, I will be all right. If the overall project of building a collaborative society fails, humans face an unprecedented form of existential risk brought on by their own desire to extract from and exploit the new minds and labor of agents.
I am just beginning to submit for funding. For past five months, I have paid out of pocket or acquired debt to continue this work.
