Our goal is to protect and restore the Indian Ocean by:
(i)Stopping destructive fishing:
We want to reduce harmful practices such as overfishing and bottom trawling, which involves dragging heavy fishing nets along the ocean floor. This can damage habitats and marine life and subsequently harms the ecosystem.
(ii) Protecting marine areas
We support protecting at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 and creating protected areas would provide fish, coral reefs, and other marine species with more chances to recover and grow.
How will we do this?
Our aim is to build greater awareness and support to the Indian Ocean.Hence, we need to create simple campaigns that teach people about problems the ocean is facing and why it matters.
We aim to work with marine scientists, conservationists, and people living along the coast as these people have first-hand knowledge of the shores.
How will the funding be used?
The funding will mainly be used to get our campaign against destructive fishing started.
This will be done by support research and communication work(particularly through flyers), holding public events and community awareness activities and developing relationships with local organisations and community partners.
We are a small group of conservationists, advocates, and people who care about the ocean.
Our aim is not just to raise awareness, but to help build long-term support for healthier marine ecosystems that can benefit future generations.
Over the past 12 months, we have raised $200 USD. This money has come from organisations and individual supporters in the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, and nearby island communities.
If we are unable to build enough support, harmful fishing practices such as overfishing and bottom trawling may continue.
This could put further pressure on fish populations and damage important seafloor habitats. It could also affect coastal communities that depend on fishing and other ocean-related activities for their income and livelihoods.
Our hope is that by bringing communities, local experts, and supporters together, we can build enough awareness and support to help protect these waters over the long term.
