We are starting the first organization focused on education hispanic communities in the U.S. about AI Safety.

The United States is home to 70.1 million Hispanic residents, 21% of the population in 2025. These communities have a very important stake in how frontier AI models are developed, deployed and governed.

HASI will help Hispanic serving institutions, journalists and community leaders understand AI risks.

This organization is in its early stages but we have plenty of traction. We have a social media channel with 800,000 monthly views, 4.5M combined views on AI safety explainers, and over 16,000 followers.

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

AI is becoming a political issue. Decisions about governance, accountability and the limits placed on frontier AI model are being debated in D.C. Hispanic communities have a (big) stake in those decisions, and their participation should extend beyond adopting technologies whose rules have already been decided.

HASI aims to connect AI safety education with the organizations that serve these communities. We will build on Latino policy advocacy by bringing attention to risks from AI, including the chance of losing human control. Our role will be to help institutions understand the evidence, develop informed positions and advocate for effective safeguards.

This work will begin through relationships with Hispanic-serving organizations, educators and journalists. We will listen to their concerns and produce bilingual materials that make difficult safety and governance questions accessible. Workshops and briefings will provide space to examine competing arguments and connect those discussions to policy decisions. What we learn from these exchanges will shape our research and advocacy priorities.

How will this funding be used?

Our working budget is $750,000 for 12 months:

• $300,000 for staff salaries.

• $60,000 for employer costs and benefits.

• $120,000 for media production and distribution.

• $70,000 for hosting events in different conferences and communities across the U.S.

• $40,000 for workshops and participant support.

• $50,000 for travel and lodging.

• $30,000 for legal, accounting, insurance and administration.

• $20,000 for software and equipment.

• $60,000 for contingency and operating reserve.

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

Tobias Martin, co-founder. Tobias works in AI safety communications at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute. He holds a B.S. in Political Science and Psychology from Minerva and an M.Ed in Learning Design, Innovation, and Technology from Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is from Argentina and works in English and Spanish. He founded @eltechbro, and is currently "the biggest latino AI Safety content creator."

Debora, co-founder. Débora M. Menieur Núñez is a Puerto Rican and Dominican author, speaker, and public servant who has spent over a decade working on complex systems and translating between the communities they're supposed to serve and the people who run them. Débora has built a career across languages and sectors in federal, municipal, non-profits, and higher education fields.

Débora graduated Summa Laude from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo, as the first Truman Scholar of her campus. Debora holds a Master of Education Policy and Analysis from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she also contributed to research on AI in K-12 education at the Child-Centered AI Lab.

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

Explanations are not enough if they fail to meet a practical need. We will test materials with our audience, experiment and narrow or discontinue formats that do not prove useful.

How much money have you raised in the last 12 months, and from where?

$15,000 from a successful summer pilot program through FLI's Digital Media Accelerator. We submitted a renewal request for $120,000 annually.
