Fermion Labs is a platform featuring interactive physics and math simulations working directly inside a web browser.
The project stemmed from my dissatisfaction with the way many scientific concepts are still presented in static textbook diagrams, while scientific software used by professionals is hard to install and unavailable to many students. I wanted to create a platform where one can interact with equations and physical systems, rather than just read about them.
Over the past few years, I have created Fermion Labs independently. The current version of the platform has 79 interactive simulations of classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, relativity, plasma physics, calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, dynamical systems, topology, and other subjects. All simulations feature numerical computations done in real-time with methods like Runge-Kutta integration and modern WebGPU rendering rather than pre-recorded animations.
More than 39,000 views of the platform encourage me to further develop it.
I am looking for funds to expand simulation library, improve numerical engine and visualization infrastructure, and have more time to develop Fermion Labs. The goal of the project is to create an accessible freely available library of high-quality interactive scientific simulations.
What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?
The goal of the project is to make high-quality scientific computing accessible via web browser. I would like to see Fermion Labs as a comprehensive library of interactive physics and math simulations accessible without any installations of additional software.
In the upcoming year, I plan to expand simulation library, increase the level of numerical accuracy and performance of the platform, implement more advanced simulations and make the platform more convenient for both classroom and personal education. I will continue developing WebGPU-based simulation engine, improve numerical methods behind the simulations, listen to users' feedback and constantly add new simulations and functionality.
How will this funding be used?
The main use of the funding is the time to focus on Fermion Labs development.
It will help cover cloud infrastructure and hosting services, hardware and development tools to test and optimize WebGPU simulation engine, and partial maintenance of my living expenses during further development of the platform along with my physics studies. That will allow me to have more time to improve the platform and add new simulations instead of developing it under financial constraints.
Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?
I am currently the sole developer of Fermion Labs.
I created the platform independently while studying physics, including simulation engine, WebGPU rendering pipeline, numerical methods, frontend, backend, and deployment process of the platform.
During the past few years, I created 79 interactive physics and math simulations on such subjects as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, relativity, plasma physics, and dynamical systems. Development of Fermion Labs required learning numerical computing, GPU programming, scientific visualization, and modern web development. The platform is currently live, has been viewed more than 39,000 times, and continues to grow with new simulations and functionality.
What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?
The main reason why the development might slow down is simply that I am creating Fermion Labs independently. Developing and maintaining a scientific software platform requires constant time and resources, which are my current limitations.
Even if the full vision of the project does not come true, the work done will not be wasted. Platform, simulations, and their source code will stay alive and can serve as a starting point for further development. The most likely result is simply slower progress, but nothing more.
