EA Community Building Initiative in China

Project summary

We are an org that tries to build EA communities in China. We do this by publishing EA content that is localized in both content and delivery. This attracts readers who are interested in an EA way of approaching altruism and looking at the world. We build in-person communities from these readers.

We see ourselves as separately arriving at, and carrying out the vision of "creating a local movement from scratch that's inspired by the ideas of EA, but is highly adapted to the local context" that Benjamin Todd advocates to do instead of rushing to translate material here.

We're choosing to remain anonymous, and have removed much information about this project. If you're interested in finding out more about us, or want make sure this is not a scam, please contact us at cneacommunity.modular556@passfwd.com

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

We hope to build a vibrant community of effective donors in China. We do this by promoting a localized version of the effectiveness mindset (through our public writing), and by offering training to Chinese students and professionals.

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

As we have chosen to remain anonymous, we cannot reveal details here. However, please feel free to contact us if you want to find out more. (cneacommunity.modular556@passfwd.com)

We have previously attended several EAGs and EAGxs. We have previously been funded by several notable EA community-building funders. We have good relations with, and actively communicate with, many highly reputed EA orgs and notable EAs.

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

We already have moderate success. However, failure for us to continue to grow will be most likely due to insufficient funding.

What other funding are you or your project getting?

Most of our current funding is from high net worth individuals in China.

My partner and I made notes on all of the projects in the EACC initiative, and thought this was one of the more convincing among some really strong competition.

Our quick and dirty notes:

Community building in China is incredibly important, and seems to have been stymied by a single speculative, outdated and honestly mildly insulting post by Ben Todd, which implied that China's EAness is a key that can be unlocked with the right language, rather than a conversation to have. We are much more positive about the prospects of involving China to engage with and even positively evolve EA ideas.

@Arepo Thank you so much for your donation and your thoughts! It's so heartening to see someone with a considered intuition about this area.

What is your method for managing potential corruption both internally and for the charities donated to, given sensitivity constraints?

Thanks for the question! We are quite transparent on our Chinese platforms, but unfortunately cannot publicize here due to anonymity concerns.

Building the Chinese EA Community seems incredibly promising and important. I also trust the organization's local expertise to navigate more contested topics such as animal welfare and get as much out of it as possible,

High upside impact, and worded carefully enough that I trust you know what you are doing. Come by the office in Serbia if you are ever around, and lmk if some of my resources in China may be of use (check me on LinkedIn for more info).
