Project summary

Edited: We now have our piece for exhibit at EAGx Berlin 8-10 Sept. and here is a video of the geodisic dome; groups of six walk through and take an audio/visual journey toward the center where they have a meaningful communal ending:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyZ2CNCcw9Y

Our working group is mounting an art exhibit at EAGx Berlin in September called "ea-X-hibitiion" approved by the organizers and led by Aron Mills in Berlin. It is visual and audio and experiential, built withing a special geodisic dome for an artistic experience and reflection of the expected 750 attendees.

Our group formed after the EAGx budget process completed, the organizers wish they could have included us in the budget but it was too late. We hope future EAG's can include a budget for arts, and believe after experiencing this piece at EAGx Berlin it will be requested for future EAG's and other conferences.

Project goals

We hope to enrich the attendee experience at EAGx Berlin by surrounding them with a complete sense experience. The members of the working group in general hope to bring more art into EA because we believe it increases human flourishing, and if EA people flourish, their good works and good ideas are more able to flourish in the world. Art amplifies everything EA hopes to create in the world.

We put forth a submission process, but we started so late, with only two months to prepare, we weren't able to really get as many submissions as you would with a normal longer lead in...however, our working group has collaborated and submitted a piece, and as an experienced art curator I can say it's really significant. Created by Aron Mills along with local Berlin collaborators and those from our working group. Six people at a time enter a geodisic dome and go on an audio/visual journey into the heart of our human condition through dark places and eventually wind toward the center for a communal discovery of hope that we may create together...it's a truly visceral journey like a good movie or song and people have been deeply moved.

The piece debuted at KiezBurn last week, the burning man of Berlin. Already other conferences are asking for it.

Potential investors can comment here or talk to me me in the Manifund discord (I'm Vuuleo).

How will this funding be used?

Far more than our intended budget of $2000 has already been spent out of pocket by the collaborators. Given Aron the organizer's connections to the EAGx Berlin team, the money could be funneled through EAGx Berlin organizers or however Manifund would prefer.

You can see the geodisic dome in the video, it was handmade, even the audio with the big read buttons were handmade, the total was paid out of pocket by the collaborators as well as hundreds of hours of labor.

What is your (team's) track record on similar projects?

Our working group is the first arts exhibition/curation group that we know of in EA, but is made up of many creative and arts based EA people with decades of cumulative experience who met and organized through the EA Anywhere Slack channel in the sub group: #role-artists. This is our first event, but the piece itself debuted in Mid-August to great success at Berlin's version of burning man called KiezBurn and has already been requested by another conference, and we anticipate it will be by many more.

How could this project be actively harmful?

We can't think of any harm to society coming from art which is in every human culture in all of recorded history. Usually the harm connected to art came from powers that felt the art challenged them and they persecuted the artists.

What other funding is this person or project getting?

The members of the working group have already funded over $2000 in cash from their own pockets and hundreds of hours of labor.

Jeffrey, thank you for aiming to improve EAGx!

Do I understand correctly, that it's not an EA related art, but general art that would aim to make an experience of attendees better? If so, I think current funders of the conference are good people to reach out to for funding: what did they say?

I'd be excited to fund EA inspired art, since I share Austin's opinion that EA could be better in this regard

As a note, I'd be more willing to fund more concrete expenses, once you have a budget for the exhibition, funding it all "in general", since it's hard to gauge how much money would be needed and what they would buy.

Hi Anton, It's actually challenging to curate art for an event like this, there are obvious EA themes, there are general altruistic themes and the specific them of the Berlin event, then there's just general art that makes the atmosphere better. And then there's just the reality of being able to get your hands on what you can get and what you can afford to get and mount. So we are still working on that and so don't know what we can get and therefore what budget we'll need to mount it.

Our working group leader in Berlin is friends with the EAGx Berlin organizing team and asked them for funding, and they said they would love to, but their budget was really tight so they were not able to...maybe it if it could have been written in earlier, that would have been better, but this initiative came around later.

So our working group just formed last week and we are really very late in the process so I'll keep things updated here and try to flesh out an actual budget asap...and maybe you and Austin and any others might mention a range you'd be willing to provide, and that could help us make concrete decisions and lead to an actual budget. Thanks.

Finally have some more info...here's our general call for submissions which gives you an idea of what it may look like...followed by a budget:

CALL FOR ART SUBMISSIONS (to be shared individually with creatives we know, for now)The EAGxBerlin conference will bring 750 people together to discuss innovations in altruistic work. EA has been pioneering new ways to more effectively do work in the fields of charity as well as thinking about how to save humanity from existential risks so we can flourish into the far future. As part of the conference we are making an open call for visual* and audio** art works for the conference being held at Urania, a historically rich Science & Culture Center, in Berlin. We are looking to curate artworks that would fit one or two of the following themes***:
A) Future Visions
What is your vision for the future? We want to see your Utopias, Protopias, or Dystopias. Do you see thriving civilization(s) past the Precipice? Solarpunk showing sustainable civilization, Transhumanism depicting life’s many potentials, or AI overlord(s) ushering in the Singularity (to name some starting points).B) Doing Good + Inspiration
We would love to see pieces that inspire us to do Good. Themes could include Moral Circle Expansion, Altruism, (Human) Connection,  Heroic Actions, Beauty, …* For digital art pieces we are aiming to offer high quality poster prints or canvas prints.** We are in conversation with the organizers and are requesting slots in the program. If we get these, we can facilitate audio art and performances. Otherwise the art would need to be reduced to visual and written pieces (distributed among the venue), to not disrupt from the conversations and talks happening throughout the conference.*** These 2 themes are something we are excited about right now. If you think you have something that doesn’t fit the themes, but would fit the event or the spirit of the call please submit your ideas! Please submit your ideas till 21. August! How to submit your ideas or get in contact for questions:

Hi Anton, thanks for your awesome words. We now have a much better ability to show you what we will be exhibiting, the piece debuted to great success at last weeks KiezBurn the burning man of Berlin. I'd love to send you a video link which I'll also post publicly in a few days. As I've mentioned in the updated post, other conferences have already requested it...you can read that new part in the project goals section. You can also contact me in the discord as Vuuleo. Thanks.

Hi Jeffrey! I do think EA suffers from a lack of inspiring art and good artists, and appreciate that you are trying to fix this. Do you happen to have any photos or links to the pieces that you intend to put on display?

Hi Austin :)
We are working on that, we just formed the working team. It will be a combination of a theme we choose as a team, and also part of it will be what is available in Berlin to avoid costs of shipping pieces...and depending on what you hope for, it could be in different mediums which will affect how it's displayed...so there's a lot to it...also we hope maybe it's mixed mediums with more than visual...so our next meeting soon we'll have to make some decisions. We'd love anyone who reads this like you to make suggestions if you have them, especially if you know artists in Berlin. Luckily Berlin's a very artistic city :)
