I am writing to request funding support for attending crucial AI safety events in San Francisco this November. Following an invitation and a support from French officials to join their journey, this represents a unique opportunity to contribute to international discussions on AI governance. However, I currently lack the necessary budget for travel and accommodation expenses, which threatens my ability to participate in these pivotal events. I’m currently moving into a new position and currently I have almost 0 ressources to dedicate for this very important journey.

The upcoming meetings in San Francisco, particularly those organized by the AI Safety Institutes of the UK and US, represent a key moment in global AI governance. These events will bring together key stakeholders to establish frameworks for AI safety evaluation and governance. Their is also many important side-event. The timing is crucial, as these discussions will shape the future of AI safety protocols, standards and international cooperation in managing advanced AI systems. The participation, as a French actor is more important than ever because we’ll have the AI Action Summit just after.

I have been actively contributing to governance and policy discussions to promoting the need for rigorous science of eval, and the critical need for global coordination through collaborations with various institutions.

The budget includes three categories: Flight A/R, Accommodation, and Other Expenses. For the Flight A/R, the minimum cost is 500€ per trip, which totals 1000€ for a round trip (500*2 = 1000€). The average (Moy) cost is also 1000€ (500*2 = 1000€), while the maximum cost is 1300€ (650*2 = 1300€). Accommodation expenses range from 200€ (Min) to 500€ (Moy) and 1000€ (Max). Other expenses remain constant at 500€ across all scenarios. Therefore, the total budget is 1200€ for the minimum, 1500€ for the average, and 2500€ for the maximum estimate.

I encouraged Tom to apply on Manifund after first seeing this proposal on Nonlinear Network. As I've previously written:

I don't know Tom, but a couple weeks ago I spoke with Lucie on the importance and neglectedness of AI governance in France. I hadn't realized that the next version of the AI Safety Summit was going to happen in France; this seems like a great reason to invest in the folks doing on-the-ground work there. In that conversation, Lucie made a strong endorsement of Tom's prior work; here I'm delegating my trust to Lucie.

This still holds true, in that my donation is not significantly informed by an inside view on Tom's work, but this seems reasonable to me for a cheap and time-sensitive travel grant.
