Karma

Karma is intended as a rough signal of whether you've made valuable contributions to Manifund and its community, or are trusted by people who have. It is shown on profiles and projects, and it decides the default order of the homepage. It is recomputed about once an hour.

Your karma

Your karma is the sum of:

  • Base karma. If you've ever deposited money on the platform, you get 10 karma.
  • Donations you've made. For each project you donate to, 2.5 Γ— (total given)0.3, so $100 is worth about 10 and $10,000 about 40. Money committed to a proposal before it reached its minimum funding is worth 1.5Γ— as much.
  • Donations your projects received. The same formula, applied to each donor's total to one of your projects.
  • Votes on your projects. Each upvote is worth log10(voter's karma): 1 point from someone with 10 karma, 2 from someone with 100, 3 from someone with 1000. Downvotes subtract the same amount.
  • Reactions to your comments. Positive reactions (βž• πŸ₯³ πŸ’‘ πŸ”₯ πŸ‘ 🌈) are weighted by the reactor's karma in the same way, then multiplied by 2. Tipped reactions are worth more: 🧑 Γ—2, πŸ… Γ—3, πŸ† Γ—5.

Because vote weight depends on the voter's karma, which depends on votes on their own projects, we compute everyone's karma together and iterate until it settles.

Project karma

A project's karma is the sum of:

  • A starting value of 2, so new projects get a chance to be near the top.
  • A prior based on the creator's karma: 5 Γ— log10(1 + karma).
  • Votes, weighted by each voter's karma as above.
  • Comments, weighted by the commenter's karma.
  • Donations: the same dollar formula, applied to each donor's total.

Homepage order

The homepage sorts projects by karma divided by (age in days + 1)1.7, so projects will move down over time unless they get more votes, comments, or donations. Projects that are no longer accepting donations are multiplied by 0.2 in this sort only; their karma is unchanged.

What doesn't count

  • Votes and comments on your own projects, or reacting to your own comments.
  • Hidden and draft projects.
